When Brad Treliving took the job as the General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he admitted that he would be looking to improve the Leafs' blueline and that he liked players with reach on the backend. He has already brought in Ilya Lyubushkin and Joel Edmundson and has now traded away another draft pick for a massive, young blueliner.

The Leafs have officially announced that they have traded a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for unsigned 23-year-old Cade Webber. Webber is currently in his fourth season at Boston University and was selected in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. The 6'7, 210 pound lefty has six assists in 30 games this season with Boston University.

While he is another lefty to add to the blueline, this is more of a future move for the Leafs and Treliving as they have a number of aging assets on the back end, and the Leafs don't exactly have a large number of defensive prospects in their system. Additionally, the Leafs have a few defensemen in the pipeline with the Marlies that may be prepared to graduate sooner than later. This trade helps to add depth for the minors on the back end.

Former GM Kyle Dubas chose to go the small, skilled route, but Treliving is sticking to his word and going in the completely opposite direction, which many Leaf fans will likely appreciate.
