Last week, Director of Amateur Scouting Wes Clark parted ways with the Leafs to join his long-time friend and boss Kyle Dubas with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The news came as a shock given that Clark had just completed the Leafs' development camp and had been very involved with invitees. While unexpected in one sense, it was also expected to happen at some point given that Clark was Dubas' guy from the beginning.
The good news, is that it did not take Brad Treliving to name his replacement and bring in his own guy. Today, the Leafs announced they hired Mark Leach as the new Director of Amateur Scouting, bringing him over from the Dallas Stars after 11 seasons.
Leach has had a excellent career in Dallas, most notably during the 2017 NHL entry draft when he had a hand in selecting Miro Heiskanen, Jake Oettinger and Jason Robertson. Leach also has a share of the credit for drafting budding star Wyatt Johnston.
Many Leaf fans thought the sky was falling when Wes Clark left, but given the track record of Leach, who was also with the Detroit Red Wings for 20 seasons that included four Stanley Cups, it's safe to say that the scouting department is in very capable hands.
