After announcing their new helmet sponsor, welcoming Oreo to the Maple Leafs family early Tuesday afternoon, the Leafs made another important announcement. The team has added to their training camp roster by signing former Calgary Flames goaltender Jon Gillies to a PTO.
Gillies, 30, was a third-round pick of the Flames in the 2012 and adds to an already crowded crease in Toronto. The 6'6, 222-pound goaltender last played in the NHL during the 2022-2023 campaign for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Gillies now joins Anthony Stolarz, Matt Murray and Joseph Woll as goalies with NHL experience at Leafs training camp and the signing is likely to provide the Leafs some added depth for the pre-season. If he were to earn a contract however, Gillies would slot into the fifth spot on the depth chart behind Stolarz, Murray, Woll and Dennis Hildeby.
Since being drafted, Gillies has skated in a total of just 35 NHL games posting an 8-16-3 record and after being unable to find a team last season, took the season off. At the very least, this is Brad Treliving trying to help out a former player get his career back on track and there is zero risk for the Maple Leafs.
