Nick Robertson's ride in Toronto has been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster that saw the the 23-year-old request a trade this past summer before ultimately signing a 1-year extension with the Leafs before the start of the season.
While there have been rumours that the Leafs could be actively shopping him, it has been confirmed that Robertson will have at least one more opportunity to prove his worth as he will be back in the lineup on Saturday evening when the puck drops at Scotiabank Arena versus Connor McDavid and the Oilers.
If the Maple Leafs are serious about shopping Robertson, they must let him play so the rest of the league knows what he has to offer.
The California native has played in 15 games for the Leafs this season and has notched just one single point over that span. Obviously, the team needs more out of him, especially after seeing what he is capable of offensively during the pre-season.
If Robertson wants to become an NHL regular, there's no question that he needs to be more consistent. He's already fighting against the odds being a smaller player in a bigger man's game. If he can't figure out a way to produce on a more consistent basis, then he could soon find his way out of Toronto via trade.
What could be Robertson's final opportunity to prove himself to new coach Craig Berube begins tonight. Let's hope he's up to the task.
