It's a matchup of two teams with very similar records thus far in the 2024-25 NHL regular season as the Toronto Maple Leafs faceoff against the Edmonton Oilers tonight. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has made his decision for his starting goaltender and fans shouldn't be shocked by his selection.
It's a case of "if it isn't broke, don't fix it", Craig Berube will be going with Anthony Stolarz between the pipes tonight. Stolarz occupied the home net for practice, indicating he gets the nod against the Oilers.
Stolarz, who has started 11 of the Maple Leafs' 18 games so far this season, has been stellar for the Buds in his initial impression.
The Maple Leafs, have also shuffled their defensive lines and forward pairs for tonight in what should be an intense game.
However, the team will still be without captain Auston Matthews, following yesterday's less than desirable update on his condition as he battles an undisclosed injury.
As for the Edmonton Oilers, Calvin Pickard started the team's last game against Nashville, where he earned a 3-2 victory. Fellow Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner is struggling quite a bit, and the Oilers seem content in sticking with Pickard for now.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are 10-6-2 heading into tonight's game, while the Edmonton Oilers are at 9-7-1. It's too bad we won't get to see two of the best players in the world go head-to-head in the game as Matthews remains on the sidelines.
Connor McDavid, meanwhile, recently became the fourth fastest NHL player to reach the 1000 point mark.
It should be a spirited battle tonight at Scotiabank Arena.
