The Maple Leafs were up 5-1 in the third period of Monday's clash with Tampa and the Lightning were on one of their six power-plays when Leafs fans followed in the footsteps of Winnipeg Jets fans. For those unaware, Jets fans began chanting 'Where is Rutger?' during their victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on the weekend.
On Monday night, fans in Toronto began chanting 'Where is Stamkos?', as to that point, the Lightning power play was struggling to gain any momentum. The Lightning eventually scored on the power play late in the game on a broken play, but failed to capitalize on a second period two-man advantage that saw Anthony Stolarz make the save of the year so far.
Steven Stamkos was forced out of Tampa and signed with the Nashville Predators when free agency began on July 1st after the Lightning essentially low-balled him on a new contract.
Much like the Lightning on Monday, Stamkos has struggled to start the season registering just 1 goal in five games as he and the Nashville Predators are off to an 0-5-0 start. The Leafs, on the other hand, could be 6-0 if it weren't for a pair of outstanding goaltending performances from Sam Montembeault and Igor Shesterkin. The Leafs have played very well to begin the season and have received some fantastic performances from Anthony Stolarz, who begins his Leafs tenure with a 3-2 record, a ridiculous 1.83 GAA and a rock solid .938 save percentage.
The Leafs are back in action on Tuesday in Columbus in game two of a back-to-back and part of ESPN's 'Frozen Frenzy', where all 32 teams are in action.
