Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Alex Steeves showcased what the NHL club missed after delivering a stellar performance in his first game back with the Toronto Marlies, notching a hat trick on Sunday, according to the Toronto Marlies' official account on X:
The 24-year-old center was recently cut by the Maple Leafs, along with several others, in the final week of training camp. This season was anticipated to be Steeves' opportunity to make the leap to the NHL, especially after signing a new two-way deal worth 775K per season. However, due to the team's significant forward depth, he did not make the final roster.
Although Steeves has seen limited action in the NHL, appearing in just seven games over the last three seasons, he has made a significant impact with the Marlies. His point totals have improved each year, with impressive seasons of 46, 51, and 57 points, respectively.
If injuries arise within the Maple Leafs' lineup, Steeves is likely to be one of the first players called up, given the flexibility of his contract and his demonstrated capability to compete at the NHL level.
If Steeves can enjoy a successful season with the Marlies once again, he could very well land himself on the short list for an early call-up should injuries arise.
