Lorentz signed a PTO with the Leafs days before training camp began after a summer spent celebrating his Stanley Cup win with the Florida Panthers. The 28-year-old impressed during the pre-season and training camp and ultimately signed a one-year deal worth $775K for this season.
The 6'4 winger from nearby Kitchener, Ontario has fit in seamlessly on the Leafs' fourth line with David Kampf and Ryan Reaves to begin the season and through four games has almost eclipsed his point total (3) from all of last season with a goal and assist. The seventh-round pick from 2015 was brought in to add size and speed to the bottom-six as well as help out on the penalty kill.
According to Sportsnet's Nick Kyreos, the Leafs have been impressed with his play through four games and appears to be a favourite of head coach Craig Berube. Kypreos noted in his recent article for the Toronto Star that the Leafs would like to extend the forward in the new year. Why wait you may be asking? For one, it has only been four games, but the main reason is due to the fact that Lorentz in not eligible to sign an extension until January 1, 2025.
There is no doubt Leaf fans would like Lorentz to stick around longer than this season as his play and personality has quickly endeared him to Leaf Nation and given it has been a life-long dream of his, Lorentz would surely like to stick around as well.
