Without Auston Matthews, who is visiting a specialist in Germany, Max Pacioretty, Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf who is battling a lower-body injury and Ryan Reaves , who begins serving his 5-game suspension, the Leafs were forced shuffle their forward group significantly.
While the Leafs are missing a number of forwards, Max Domi did return to practice after missing the past few sessions for maintenance as he attempts to control a nagging injury.
Domi centered Matthew Knies and William Nylander on the second line. The first line of Bobby McMann, John Tavares and Mitch Marner remained intact, while rookie Fraser Minten was thrust into third line duties straight away, centering Nicholas Robertson and Pontus Holmberg. The fourth line saw Alex Steeves draw back into the lineup in place of the suspended Reaves and alongside Steven Lorentz and Connor Dewar.
On the back end, there were no changes, as Morgan Rielly remained with Jani Hakanpaa while Jake McCabe skated with Chris Tanev on the team's shutdown pair, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson continued to skate on the left side with Conor Timmins.
The Leafs did not reveal who their starting goalie would be for Wednesday's game, but given the fact that the team has had three full days off and will be playing just their second game in a week, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Anthony Stolarz get the nod.
