The Toronto Maple Leafs opened their 2024-25 season last night with a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators. The Maple Leafs fell short, losing 6-5 in overtime after rallying in the third period, led by newcomer Max Pacioretty, who contributed 3 points, to help push the game into extra time.
Before the game began, the Maple Leafs shared a heartfelt tribute to the late Gaudreau brothers. Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were tragically struck and killed by a drunk driver on August 29, 2024.
The Maple Leafs shared the tribute on X:
The touching tribute highlighted many moments shared between the Gaudreau brothers and their families, as well as their impactful careers in hockey. It concluded with a moment of silence lasting 13 seconds, honoring the number worn by Johnny Gaudreau in the NHL.
Maple Leafs fans and hockey enthusiasts worldwide are devastated by the loss of the Gaudreau brothers. Chris Tanev, the Leafs' big summer addition, really appreciated the tribute, as Gaudreau was a friend and former teammate in Calgary.
This past week, Tanev addressed the loss of Johnny Gaudreau and the impact it had on him. Tanev had this to say during his recent interview with NHL.com.
A nice touch by the Maple Leafs, who showed a lot of class with the touching tribute, honouring the memories of two players and people who are gone far too soon.
