Matthews was named the 26th captain in Leafs history earlier this offseason after John Tavares happily passed the torch to his younger protege, expressing his agreement with the decision and his excitement in being involved in the transition.
On Tuesday on Twitter/X, the Maple Leafs shared a preview of a some of the photos featuring Matthews in his new role, and it appears to be a perfect fit as the captaincy looks like it belongs on his jersey.
Matthews is coming off of a remarkable year, the best statistical season of his career, setting a new personal best with 69 goals in 81 games, just one shy of the 70-goal mark. This achievement earned him his third Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the league's top scorer.
Despite Matthews' individual success, the Maple Leafs have struggled to advance past the first round during his tenure, achieving this feat only once in his eight years with the team.
With Matthews now the captain of the storied franchise, the Maple Leafs hope his leadership will propel them further in the playoffs and there's a lot of belief that he will do just that, ushering in a brand new era in Toronto.
