The funeral of the Gaudreau brothers, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, took place on Monday after both were struck and killed by a drunk driver on August 29th. Their deaths shook the hockey world and even now, it almost doesn't seem real.
Despite being at a funeral, a Habs reporter forgot his time and place and tried to call forward Cole Caufield over for an interview. Yes -- at a funeral.
While not egregious, it is moments like this that remind us just how out of touch the media can be, all in the name of a scoop. All of these NHL players are there to mourn their lost friends and peers and in Caufield's case, his idol. They're not there to see or speak to the media. Is it really so difficult to let people grieve in peace?
Training camps start very soon. Any questions one might have will be answered by these same players in a matter of days. While we do love to dunk on the Habs on occasion, there's a time and a place and this isn't it. We won't say much more than that this reporter should be ashamed and perhaps this will be an important learning moment.
Wives have lost their husbands. Children have lost their fathers. A family has lost its sons. Put the mic away for a moment and be a human being.
R.I.P. to Johnny and Matthew. The sticks are still out for you, two good hockey boys and family men who deserved a better fate.
