Matthew Knies fires shot at hometown Coyotes ahead of Wednesday's game in Arizona
Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Matthew Knies opened the scoring against the St. Louis Blues earlier today just 22 seconds into the second period on a nifty individual effort. The goal gave Knies his third point in two games and helped secure a 4-2 win for the Leafs as they kicked off a four-game road trip. Knies and the Leafs' next stop is in his home state of Arizona.
Following the game, Knies was asked about the opportunity to play in front of his family and friends and asked how many would be attending Wednesday's game. In response, Knies said the game would be well-attended by his loved ones, but also fired a shot at the Coyotes over the Mullett Arena situation.
"Between 50 and 60 [friends and family] which is probably a section in that arena."
Arizona's arena issues have plagued the league for years and they are currently still playing at Arizona State University's 5000-seat arena until they can call a new arena home.
The Leafs' upcoming game in Arizona will be the first time the 21-year-old rookie will be playing in his hometown and he will be looking to continue to build on his recent streak of very good play. Since February first, Knies has 6 points in 7 games and in 51 games for the Leafs in his rookie season, he has 10 goals and 23 points skating alongside fellow Arizona native Auston Matthews and superstar winger Mitch Marner.
