In 2019, Yeo was fired by St. Louis after a season and a half and replaced by Berube, who was his assistant at the time. Berube would then go on to lead the Blues to the Stanley Cup.
A former head coach for the Minnesota Wild as well, Yeo has spent the past five seasons as an assistant with the Philadelphia Flyers and Canucks. According to reports, Yeo was offered an extension by the Canucks, but the Toronto native declined, stating that he wanted to explore work "closer to home".
The 50-year-old has not only been tied to the Leafs, but has also interviewed in Ottawa with Travis Green. According to Patrick Johnston of The Province, Yeo leaving Vancouver came as a surprise as he was well liked by many in the organization, as well as the players.
In Vancouver, he was responsible for the Canucks' penalty kill, which finished dead last during the 2022-2023 season and in the middle of the pack (17th overall) this past season.
In 9 seasons as an NHL head coach, Yeo has compiled a 263-217-62 record, good enough for a .542 points percentage in the regular season, but struggled in the playoffs posting a record of just 17-22 in 39 playoff games.
As a head coach, Yeo may not have been anything to write home about. However, as an assistant coach, he may be much better suited to the role. His familiarity with Berube is also a huge plus. We'll see where this goes.
