John Tavares led the Maple Leafs to their first win in three games, securing a hat trick in a 6-4 victory against the previously undefeated Winnipeg Jets. Despite being demoted to the second power-play unit, Tavares' chemistry with William Nylander and Max Pacioretty was integral to his explosion in production, which was a key factor in the win.
It was not only a statement game for Tavares but also a milestone night. As noted by Lance Hornby on X:
Tavares continues to make history and climb the all-time points leaderboard. The lingering question is how far he'll go as he continues to climb.
Contract extension talks have reportedly already begun between the Leafs and Tavares, so if/when a deal gets done, there will be plenty more milestones to celebrate right at home in Toronto.
Another veteran Maple Leaf who enjoyed a milestone night was long-tenured defenseman Morgan Rielly.
According to PR_NHL on X:
Rielly has been solid so far this season under the new coach Craig Berube, focusing on defensive responsibility. He also benefits from a strengthened defensive corps, thanks to the off-season additions of Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Chris Tanev.
The Maple Leafs hope to build on this victory and continue their success in Thursday's matchup against the Seattle Kraken.
