NHL Insider Shares Exciting Update Amid Matt Murray Speculation in Toronto
With rumours swirling of a possible return to the NHL for Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray, one NHL Insider has shared some exciting news.
Amid numerous rumours that Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray is about to make a return to the NHL, a thrilling update has emerged from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
Leafs coach Craig Berube took notice of an excellent performance from from Matt Murray last night in the AHL, where he stopped all 27 shots he faced, and it sounds as though he's about to get his chance to show he can still hang in the NHL.
While somewhat vague, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman released a post on X, stating that Murray is about to make his return to the Maple Leafs, which would be his first appearance on the main squad since April of 2023.
Toronto's next game is against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night, which would be a perfect situation for Murray's return. Whether he gets the starting position, or will slot in as backup for the game remains to be seen.
Toronto is, of course, dealing with an injury to goaltender Anthony Stolarz, who basically took over the Maple Leafs' net this season. Joseph Woll is ready for the expanded workload in Stolarz's absence, but needs a reliable backup.
It's not exactly clear yet whether Murray can fill those shoes, but his eight games in the AHL this season have surpassed many expectations as he sports a 4-1-2 record, with a 1.85 goals against average and an impressive .931 save percentage.
Besides the game against the Sabres tomorrow, the Maple Leafs have games against the New York Islanders and Winnipeg Jets before Christmas Day. It's a pretty safe bet we'll see Murray in there somewhere.
