A fast, effective penalty killer, Gregor joined the Leafs on a PTO during training camp last season and did enough to earn a 1-year, league minimum deal with the club in a bottom-six role. Gregor skated in 63 games last season, but fell out of the lineup in the playoffs, playing in just two games in the first round against the Boston Bruins. In those 63 games, he registered 6 goals and 12 points playing primarily on the fourth line and penalty kill. The 25-year-old is an RFA but has arbitration rights available to him if he were to get a qualifying offer from the Leafs. That seems unlikely according to The Athletic's Joshua Kloke however thanks to his lack of production and the emergence of Easton Cowan.
It would be a surprise if Cowan made the team out of camp, but given the Leafs have a handful of Toronto Marlies looking to make the jump, such as Alex Steeves, Nick Abruzzese, Ryan Tverberg and others, adding one of those players who have a more diverse skillset to the bottom-six would benefit the Leafs more than having Gregor in the lineup. Not to mention those players would cost significantly less than Gregor who will likely end up with a contract of $1M or more and for the Leafs, every dollar they can save on role players will go a long way to rebuilding their blueline.
