Despite what has been a surprising and fantastic start to the 2024-25 NHL regular season, Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz had an off night last night against the Florida Panthers, letting in four goals on 23 shots in a 5-1 loss.
Stolarz can hardly be blamed for the outcome, given the injuries the Maple Leafs have faced recently, including having another forward leave the game against Florida as Bobby McMann was injured in the 2nd period and did not return.
Still, Florida Panthers fans decided they were going to pile on Stolarz for his performance, mocking him with chants of "We want Woll!," referring to Toronto's tandem goaltender, Joseph Woll.
It's pretty sad on the part of Panthers' fans that this happened. Again, while Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube is hinting at multiple returns for the team on Saturday, what Florida faced last night was a severely depleted roster.
What's worse about the Panthers fans taunting Anthony Stolarz is that he was a member of the Panthers' own Stanley Cup winning roster last season and had just received his Stanley Cup ring earlier in the day.
The Florida Panthers have had little to celebrate lately. The win over the Toronto Maple Leafs was only the defending Stanley Cup champions' second win in eight games.
Meanwhile, the loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Leafs, who have managed to keep up quite well even with the mounting injuries. There's little reason to believe Stolarz won't bounce back when he's back between the pipes.
