McIlroy shot a final-round 64 on Sunday to finish tied for fourth at the RBC Canadian Open. It was his fourth top-10 finish this season and although he didn't win, he called it a 'solid week' of golf. McIlroy sat down with Sportsnet's Adam Stanley, where the four-time Major champion admitted he had never been to a hockey game, but that it would be 'amazing' to attend a Leafs game.
According to Adam Stanley, the 35-year-old spent one evening at dinner with someone «intimately involved» in the Maple Leafs organization. McIlroy opened up to Stanley about the conversations that were had and revealed that some significant changes are coming this off-season.
Who would have thought that McIlroy would inadvertently become an 'insider' over the weekend as he attempted to capture his fourth Canadian Open title. That appears to be the case, however, and with recent reports indicating the Leafs have held contract talks with Tyler Bertuzzi, changes already appear to be in the making. Keeping Bertuzzi may not be a 'change' personnel-wise, but it would be a change in keeping some continuity among the forward group.
With just a couple of weeks until the NHL entry draft and free agency, it is expected that the Leafs and GM Brad Treliving will be making lots of noise in the hopes of becoming the next Canadian team to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, following suit with the Edmonton Oilers.
It is worth mentioning that Keith Pelley, current head at MLSE, was previously the President and CEO of the PGA's European Tour prior to arriving in Toronto.
