The Leafs visit the New Jersey Devils and their former coach Sheldon Keefe on Thursday and ahead of their meeting, Keefe had some surprising things to say.

Days after another first-round playoff exit, Sheldon Keefe was fired by the Maple Leafs, but it didn't take him long to land on his feet.

Just a couple of weeks later, Keefe joined the New Jersey Devils as their head coach and after a pair of games overseas to kick off the NHL season as part of the Global Series, Keefe has the Devils sitting pretty with a perfect record.

The Leafs kicked off their season Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens and fell to their long-time rivals by a score of 1-0 in a game that saw them fire 47 shots on net.

As the Devils headed to the dressing room after their morning skate, Keefe stopped to talk to some of the Toronto reporters he had built a relationship with during his time in Toronto and had a message for the Leafs ahead of puck drop.

"I got nothing but love & respect to the people on the other side ... I do think the team is in a really good place. Love the moves that Tree made in the off-season. The team is as good as it's ever been & I wish them nothing but the best."

Keefe has always been a humble and respectful person, and his comments about his former team show that once again. In the midst of his comments about the Leafs, Keefe also hoped that he wouldn't be the victim ofobjects being thrown at his bench like a couple of years ago when the Devils had three goals called back against the Leafs.

"I'm looking forward to getting a taste of it from this side and hope we get through it without them throwing anything at us like they did a few years ago."

The Leafs have yet to make any decisions regarding a starting goaltender, but we could very well see rookie Dennis Hildeby get the nod. With the Leafs starting their season with a loss and Keefe looking to prove his old team wrong, this game should be full of intensity.
