A new McDonald's teaser trailer has officially dropped featuring Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews and Oilers captain Connor McDavid with tremendous throwback vibes.

Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid appear to have officially teamed up to recreate an iconic NHL/McDonald's commercial from the 1990's, featuring Wayne Gretzky and Mats Sundin.

Gretzky and Sundin, two of the greatest NHLers of their era, were featured in a McDonald's commercial more than two decades ago, calling their shots to determine who pays for their McDonald's lunch.

The commercial has been out of circulation for ages, but thanks to the power of the internet and YouTube, I was able to track it down.

Now, in 2024-25, Matthews and McDavid are re-writing the story with a shootout of their own, as appears to be the premise of the commercial, given the recently released trailer.

Matthews has missed a considerable amount of games so far this season due to a mysterious upper-body injury, but even with 9-game and 6-game absences in November and December, the Scottsdale, Arizona product has managed to produce 12 goals and 28 points in just 26 games.

Like Gretzky and Sundin, McDavid and Matthews are two of the very top players of their era, which is certainly saying a lot, given the fact that they play among many other future Hall-of-Famers like Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Nathan MacKinnon, to name a few.

The official launch date of the commercial, according to the trailer, is Tuesday, January 7th, 2025. I'd imagine that it will be a popular one among fans in Toronto and Edmonton at the very least.
