Washington Capitals superstar taking an immediate leave of absence as health issues persist
Last season, Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom underwent hip surgery and missed the first half of the season before returning on January 8th against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Backstrom would go on to skate in 39 games for the Capitals last season. Heading into this season, Backstrom appeared healthy and ready to help Alexander Ovechkin chase Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record. Unfortunately, Backstrom announced today that he would be taking time away from the game.
In a statement released jointly with the Washington Capitals, Backstrom said that he is still feeling the effects of his injuries and wants to take some time for his health.
"Given my ongoing injury situation, I decided to take some time and step away from the game. This is a difficult decision, but one that I feel is right for my health at this time. I want to thank my teammates, the organization and fans for their unwavering support throughout this process. I ask for privacy at this time as I determine my next steps and viable options moving forward."
The 35-year-old has this season and next remaining on his current contract that will see him earn $9.2M annually. Through 8 games this season, Backstrom has just 1 assist as he and the Capitals have struggled out of the gate.

In a statement released by Capitals President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Brian MacLellan, the Capitals stated they support Backstrom and understand his ongoing situation.
"We stand behind Nicklas and will support him throughout this process. We know firsthand how hard he has worked and how determined he is to get back to full health. Our organization stands fully behind him while he takes his leave of absence from the team and takes time to evaluate his current health situation."
While retirement is not yet something being discussed, we can't ignore it as a possibility. If that's the case, it could be a very unfortunate end to a career that saw Backstrom become one of the greatest playmakers of all-time. Through 1,105 games, Backstrom has just 271 goals but has 762 assists and 1,033 points.
