It's been a gut wrenching day for everyone involved whether directly or indirectly after the news was confirmed earlier today that both Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau had passed away after being struck by a drunk driver last night in Oldmans Township in New Jersey.
News surfaced and was being leaked last night around 10:30 PM (EST) from a few sources, including Dylan Robillard, who was a writer for Flyers Nitty Gritty - a credentialed media outlet for the Philadelphia Flyers, Lehigh Valley Phantoms, Reading Royals, and Delaware Thunder.
Due to the sensitivity of the information, he received a lot of backlash to a point where he deleted the initial tweet about the incident. Unfortunately, it gained a lot of traction, and once the news came to light this morning, Flyers Nitty Gritty was put in a difficult position, where they were forced to relieve him of his duties.
Trying to be the first one to a major news story can have it's benefits, but when dealing with something of this magnitude and something so sensitive, a certain level of respect for the family and the process needs to be exercised. It should've been handled very carefully and left to either the family, the police, or the team to announce -- a lesson this reporter had to learn the hard way.
