James Reimer, a former fan favorite during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2010 to 2016, has been claimed off waivers by a rival team in the Atlantic Division.
Reimer, 36, was surprisingly placed on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday following a difficult start to the season. He was winless in his two appearances with Anaheim this season.
Now, the former Leafs netminder will have another opportunity to show that he can still play hockey at the NHL level after being claimed from waivers today.
As reported by David Pagnotta on X:
The Buffalo Sabres, long-time rivals of the Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division, are adding a veteran presence to their crease. Reimer will help to groom the Sabres' young goalie tandem of 25-year-old Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and 22-year-old Devon Levi. With over 500 NHL games under his belt, Reimer's experience will be a valuable asset to the Sabres.
Although Reimer was beloved by Leafs fans, the goaltending situation in Toronto is very different now. Despite a recent loss to the Ottawa Senators, Anthony Stolarz has been impressive in his first season with the Maple Leafs, seeming to have taken over as the starting goalie, pushing Joseph Woll into more of a backup role.
The Maple Leafs won't face the Sabres until December 15th at home, and even then, there's no guarantee that he'll be in goal against his former team.
