Coyotes dunk on the Canadiens for drafting Slafkovsky over Cooley after big win
When the Montreal Canadiens drafted Juraj Slafkovsky with the 1st overall pick in 2022, the decision was met with a significant level of scrutiny. There were a lot of questions about Slafkovsky's overall game, but given the fact that he possessed NHL size and had shown himself to be a pretty prolific scorer in his draft year, it was certainly believed at the time that his game would translate over well at the NHL level.
Fast forward to this season, Slafkovsky has managed just 1 lone assist in 10 games, bringing his grand total up to 11 points in 49 NHL games - a far cry from the dominance that many had expected from the 6'3, 230-pound winger.
Last night, the Coyotes took on the Canadiens at home in Arizona and with Logan Cooley having assisted on Nick Schmaltz's winner on the power play, the Yotes opted to take a bit of a parting shot at the Habs by dunking on the Canadiens on social media for selecting Slafkovsky over Cooley.
Cooley is now up to 1 goal and 7 assists in 10 games, leading all rookies with 8 points in the early stages of the season. The Coyotes also took sole position of 3rd place in the Central Division with the win, behind only Dallas and Colorado, boasting a 5-4-1 record to begin the season.
I have little doubt that, if given the opportunity, the Canadiens might make a different decision with that 1st overall pick in a re-draft. Would it have been Logan Cooley at #1? Simon Nemec? That's anyone's guess, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that they'd probably pass on Slafkovksy in a re-draft.
