Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev stretchered off following devastating injury
Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Mikhail Sergachev was primed to build on his career high campaign last season, but instead has had to endure an injury riddled season. The Russian native joined his team to face the New York Rangers in his first appearance since suffering a lower body injury in a game on December 21st.
During the second period, Sergachev's bad luck season went from bad to worse. The Lightning defenceman went into the corner chasing the puck, when he got tangled up with Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere after a reverse hit. Sergachev's leg took a nasty twist in the process.
The medical staff treated Sergachev on the ice, eventually having him depart on a stretcher. The 25-year-old's season may be over.
In 33 games Sergachev has scored 2 goals and 19 points while sporting an ugly -15. This is a far cry from his career high 64 points last season.
Sergachev took to social media after the game to express his frustration over the situation he finds himself in. You have to appreciate the honesty and vulnerability he displays.
"Oh man, why me? Why now? After all the games missed, coming back and getting injured again, feels unfair, feels terrible. Trying to stay calm and positive, but it's impossible. After doing everything right I get this. The universe is unpredictable I guess, and has its own plans , but f--k the universe man, I know I'll come back stronger and I know I'll play better than before, but it's tough right now, and it's gonna be tough tomorrow. We all fight our own battles and this is mine. I'll win, always do. Pain meds are good tho, if I was in the forest by myself I'd be dead, crazy innit?! Wanted to write how I feel here, don't know why, but just wanted to let people that care about me know! I appreciate all of your messages. Thanks to the medical staff."
From the look of the injury, it appears to be a serious one, but we won't know the extent until Sergachev is evaluated and Bolts coach Jon Cooper provides an update.
