So far in the playoffs, McDavid is averaging 2.27 points per game, that is the third best playoff points per game in NHL history. Only Wayne Gretzky, in 1983 & 1985, has averaged more in a single playoff run.
What makes this even more impressive is that goals came easier in the 1980's. In 1985, the average goals scored by one team per game was 3.89, much higher than this season when the average was only 3.14.
McDavid's impressive regular season and playoff performance this year has put him in some elite company. His 148 overall points for the entire year (123 regular season & 25 playoff) is the second best seen in 25 years. He is only one point away from tying Evgeni Malkin's 2008-09 overall 149 points (113 regular season & 36 playoff).
McDavid will get a chance to surpass Malkin's 2009 total, and advance to the third round for the first time in his career tomorrow night as the series shifts back to Calgary for game five.
