It wasn't an overly busy day on the waiver wire on Wednesday, but all 3 of the players involved in waiver activity have ties to the Toronto Maple Leafs - the obvious one being Jack Campbell.

On Tuesday, Oilers GM Ken Holland shocked the hockey world when he waived Campbell at the beginning of his 2nd season into a 5-year,$25M deal. Campbell was brought in to help change the Oilers' fate in goal. Obviously, it hasn't worked out as planned and surprisingly or unsurprisingly, depending on how you look at it, Campbell has actually cleared waivers.

Campbell has shown glimmers of star potential during his time with the Leafs, but ultimately couldn't put it all together when the games really mattered in the postseason. He was dead set on a long-term deal upon the expiry of his deal with the Leafs, but then Leafs GM Kyle Dubas was not keen on offering a long-term deal, preferring a 2-3 year deal instead. Campbell got his 5-year term and his $5M AAV from the Oilers in free agency during the summer of 2022.

Now, having cleared waivers, I'm sure that the Oilers will attempt, in earnest, to move Campbell to another team. If they can't, a buyout is possible this summer - that is, if Campbell doesn't turn it all around in the AHL and earn himself a recall in the coming weeks.

In other waiver activity yesterday, Dryden Hunt cleared for the Flames as well, and is eligible to be sent to the AHL. For those who may recall, Dryden Hunt came over to Toronto in a deal with the Avalanche, which sent Denis Malgin to Colorado. Hunt was then dealt to the Calgary Flames at the trade deadline in exchange for Radim Zahorna, who left as a free agent this summer.

Andreas Johnsson is another player involved in Wednesday's waiver activity, with the Pittsburgh Penguins placing the ex-Leaf on waivers for the purpose of a contract termination. If Johnsson clears tomorrow at 2pm, the Pens will terminate his contract and he'll be free to sign with another team or to pursue additional opportunities, perhaps overseas.
