Insider confirms what many had already expected about Sheldon Keefe in Toronto
One of the most intriguing storylines surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs coming into the offseason was what would happen with GM Kyle Dubas and head coach Sheldon Keefe. As we know, Dubas was let go by the team shortly after the Leafs were wiped out in the 2nd round by the Florida Panthers. Many had assumed that once a new GM came in, Keefe would be next in line to be relieved of his duties, but as we know now, that hasn't been the case.
When Brad Treliving was hired in Toronto, he told the media that he would need to spend time with everyone in the organization to determine what the next steps would be. Naturally, Sheldon Keefe was one of those individuals who Treliving had met with and, by all accounts, it would appear as if those meetings went well.
During the most recent edition of 32 Thoughts, Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman touched on the search for a new assistant coach to replace the departed Spencer Carbery - and, by extension, the status of Sheldon Keefe with the team, as Keefe had had been involved in the search.
"I had a couple of names float my way there's one name I think you've [Friedman] talked about before, I believe Elliotte, I can't remember which team it was around Karl Taylor Todd Nelson and listen, I think a lot of us wonder about Mitch Love after he didn't get the Calgary gig I don't know how far the Maple Leafs are along in that process of trying to find the next assistant coach to replace Spencer Carbery, but those are three that, you know, I had conversations about over the weekend." - Marek on a trio of potential options for the Leafs
"In the end, it confirms what we had suspected for some time, which is that Keefe is coming back. They haven't announced anything, but he's coming back. I believe that once Treliving was hired it increased the chances, and there was one minute where I kind of wondered if that's what the Rangers were waiting for, but generally, I've believed since Treliving arrived that Keefe was coming back and that's going to be happening. He's coming back." - Friedman on the status of Sheldon Keefe in Toronto
So there you have it. Keefe is coming back next season, per Elliotte Friedman. There was a time where his future looked bleak in Toronto, but with a new GM in place, all parties appear to be aligned that Keefe, who coached the Leafs to a top-4 finish last season, will be back.
