Insider suggests that one Leafs UFA may be plucked by Kyle Dubas and the Pens on July 1st
As we close in on July 1st and the beginning of free agency, the Leafs still have a very long list of boxes that need checking this summer. They've got 20 UFAs and RFAs in need of new deals and we know that not everyone will be back.
One of the more interesting names in Toronto in the bottom six is David Kampf, who was brought in a pair of summers ago as a defensive specialist, a a strong faceoff option and a quality penalty killer. We haven't heard much about Kampf with the bulk of the focus right now being on Auston Matthews, William Nylander and what Brad Treliving plans to do with Sheldon Keefe.
On Thursday edition of Leafs Morning Take, host Nick Alberga had Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli on the show and when it came time to talk about some of the UFAs in Toronto, Seravalli had a very interesting take on what might happen with Kampf this summer.
"David Kampf, I wouldn't be shocked at all if he ended up in Pittsburgh. I think that's the perfect Kyle Dubas player. In a new city, with cap constraints, that's a relatively low cost add to your team to make that team better." - Seravalli on David Kampf potentially joining Kyle Dubas in Pittsburgh
I'm sure the Leafs would love to retain Kampf if the money makes sense, but he'll almost certainly be looking for a raise over the $1.5M he made in each of the last two seasons. Add to that the fact that Brad Treliving has already spoken about building a bottom six with a real identity and the writing may already be on the wall for Kampf in Toronto, as the Leafs seek some change this summer.
