Leafs announce surprising roster for tonight's pre-season game against the Montreal Canadiens
The Leafs begin a back-to-back against the Habs tonight and they have unveiled a very surprising roster for tonight's game. As reported by The Hockey News' David Alter, there are just two forwards with an AAV over $2 million and just two defenseman with an AAV over $1 million. The two forwards are Tyler Bertuzzi and David Kampf and the two defensemen are Connor Timmins and Timothy Liljegren as the rest of the Leafs' main roster has been given the night off.
In goal, the Leafs have Keith Petruzzelli and Ilya Samsonov and based on the roster layout, Petruzzelli is slated to start. Given the roster for tonight's game, this could very well be the final time we see a number of players at camp as there will likely be a handful of cuts made following the game. Those players are likely to include Nick Abruzzese, Max Ellis, Logan Shaw, William Lagesson, Mikko Kokkonen, and Matteo Pietroniro.
The Leafs will be taking on the Habs again tomorrow night and we should see more of their main roster playing along with players that survive the first round of cuts. The real question is what will happen with camp standouts like Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan, both of whom were originally expected to be returned to their OHL teams this week. Will they stick with the team past this weekend? That remains to be seen.
Minten is slated to play tonight, with Cowan getting the night off and likely to join tomorrow's group for the 2nd half of the back-to-back, if he isn't sent back to London that is.
