Today, following practice, Keefe gave an update on both of the injured Leafs' defensemen. Timmins' injury is "significant" according to Keefe and he's expected to be out on a week-to-week basis, while Klingberg has been off the ice for five days now and Keefe is expecting him to "turn the corner quickly" to join the team again soon.
Timmins was having a superb camp, including a 4-point game against Buffalo on Wednesday and appeared to be a frontrunner to challenge for a roster spot on the blueline. It is unfortunate news for Timmins, but the hope is that he recovers quicker than expected and is able to get back to the level he had been playing at during training camp. The Leafs will likely look to have Klingberg back for a game or two before the pre-season ends later this week.
With Timmins' injury being significant, placing him on LTIR could help the Leafs get closer to being cap compliant, at least temporarily. His $1.1M salary would bring the Leafs down to being just $1.8M over instead of their current $2.9M over.
