Leafs lose yet another defenseman, this time to a metropolitan division team
After spending the first six years of his NHL career in the Atlantic Division, Victor Mete has chosen to head south of the border for next season. Mete signed 1-year, two-way deal with the Flyers today that will pay him $775K in the NHL, $450K in the AHL and has a guarantee of $500K.
Mete played in just 11 games for the Leafs last season before suffering an injury that forced him to miss the remainder of the season and playoffs. Prior to joining the Leafs last season, Mete spent the previous season and a half with Ottawa and before that spent 3.5 seasons with Montreal.
Drafted 100th overall in the 2016 draft, Mete has struggled to earn a permanent place in the NHL as only in his second season did he play more than 55 games. Over 247 career games, Mete has just 5 goals and 45 points.
Mete will once again be a fringe player for another NHL club, but if he can stay healthy and have a good training camp he might be able to find his way into more than the 48 games he has played the past two seasons. While he is an excellent skater, it is his size that has made it difficult to stick in the NHL. The left shot defenseman is only 5'9.
