Leafs reveal jersey numbers for two newly-acquired defensemen
Just a day after acquiring the likes of Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty from the Chicago Blackhawks, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas swung a trio of deals on Tuesday, which saw Rasmus Sandin and Pierre Engvall moved to Washington and Long Island, respectively, and Luke Schenn and Erik Gustafsson landing with the Buds.
Schenn, who was originally drafted by the Leafs with the 5th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, has worn #2 for the majority of his career, minus the 4 years he spent in Philadelphia when he wore #22 and the year he spent in Los Angeles when he wore #52. However, with the recently acquired McCabe having already opted for #2, Schenn has opted to return to #22, which was last worn by Zach Bogosian (2021).
Meanwhile, Gustafsson has worn #56 for much of his career, aside from brief stints wearing #52 and #32. With #56 currently available in Toronto, Gus will continue on with that number during his time with the Leafs. The number was last worn by Kristians Rubins (2022).
