The last time we saw Ilya Samsonov between the pipes he gave up three goals on four shots against Tampa and was pulled in favour of Joseph Woll, who went on to win three straight games, including salvaging the Tampa game, before getting the night off yesterday in Nashville. Samsonov, in his first start since last weekend, looked much better and more like last year's version of himself.

Ahead of yesterday's game, Samsonov was very candid about how he felt about his recent play saying he knew he was better than how he was playing and that it was tough for him mentally. Following the game, Samsonov said he felt much better.

"I think it is step forward for me. Result, we lost, yeah, but we see a lot of positive things for me & the team." - Samsonov on his play last night

Sheldon Keefe echoed Samsonov's comments.

"He should feel good about it. He looked good. He looked solid. There were a few really good chances there where he looked like Sammy of last season. It is a good effort from him tonight. He did his job and gave us a chance to win the game. We just didn't score enough for him." - Keefe on Samsonov's outing on Saturday

The Leafs should have won last night's game and ended their five-game road trip with a 4-1 record, but they unfortunately had some soft coverage on two of the three Nashville goals that allowed for them to be caught out of position. Regardless of the outcome, Samsonov looked much better and much more comfortable than he had in any of his previous starts. If he can continue to find his form and Joseph Woll continues to play at the level we have seen, the Leafs' goaltending situation is in a good spot moving forward.
