In a recent interview with Sportsnet's Luke Fox, Matthews opened up on his summer after being named team captain and his insight on what's ahead for the club. Big things are expected as per usual in Toronto and Matthews is going to be at the forefront through it all.
The big summer news wasn't in fact a trade or a free agent signing, it came when John Tavares handed over the captaincy to his fellow teammate as his new contract extension kicks in this season. Matthews has always been viewed as the face of the organization and now he'll also be the voice of the franchise, which may not be an easy transition.
Being a team leader isn't going to be brand new for Matthews as he has worn the "A" for several years, so he's not going to attempt to reinvent the wheel this season and will assuredly lean on his fellow teammates like Tavares.
As for what he expects to accomplish in 2024-25 as a collective unit, the captain wants what everyone is hoping for and that's a Stanley Cup. Brad Treliving and company made several changes to back-end, added a backup goaltender, and brought in a new head coach. Matthews opened up about that and expressed his thoughts.
Only time will tell if the Maple Leafs can get over their playoff woes this season but Matthews will do whatever he can as player and captain to make sure they go as far possible this year.
