Doug Gilmour is celebrated as one of the greatest players ever to wear the blue and white of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Known for his exceptional offensive skills, stellar playoff performances, and gritty play despite his smaller stature, Gilmour is particularly renowned for his 1992-93 season.
That year, he achieved an impressive franchise record 127 points to go along with his 100 penalty minutes, while also delivering an outstanding playoff performance with 35 points in 21 games, leading his team to the Conference Finals.
On the Missin' Curfew Podcast this week, Gilmour took some time to discuss his close and significant relationship with the legendary Don Cherry, with whom he was very close during his playing days.
Don Cherry is best known for his long tenure on "Hockey Night in Canada," and more specifically, "Coach's Corner" a program that aired during the intermissions of Saturday night hockey games across Canada.
Gilmour admitted that Cherry was biased towards him because of his Kingston roots.
Gilmour also shared an amusing superstition he had with Cherry during his Stanley Cup-winning season with the Calgary Flames in 1989.
Finally, Gilmour defended Cherry's on-air persona, noting that it was part of his job rather than his true character off-screen.
No matter one's personal views on Don Cherry, there's no denying that his influence and contributions to the sport of hockey are profound and ever-lasting.
