Cowan is looking to make the Toronto Maple Leafs out of training camp this fall, rather than going back to play another year of junior hockey with the London Knights.
After winning the OHL championship and being named OHL MVP, Cowan entered development camp with a much bigger frame that he entered development and training camp with last year and knows what he has to do to earn a spot on the Leafs' roster.
Part of the game management is on the defensive side of the puck, which is something Cowan says he has been working on.
The defensive side of the puck is where Cowan and even Fraser Minten need to be most aware of, as that area is what has caused Nick Robertson to be in and out of the lineup with the Leafs the past couple of seasons. While GM Brad Treliving is not handing out spots to Cowan and Minten, the Leafs do have the flexibility to give one or both of them a spot if they earn it.
