Easton Cowan Trade on the Table for the Maple Leafs After Disappointing World Juniors?
After a disappointing showing by Easton Cowan and Team Canada at the World Junior Championship, Cowan may be available for trade.
Team Canada was once again eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing 4-3 to Team Czechia, leaving fans searching for someone to blame for the loss.
One player at the center of the discussions after a disappointing tournament is Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan.
Expected to take on a significant role in the tournament, Cowan struggled, finishing with only three points (one goal) in five games, leading to widespread criticism.
Sid Seixeiro believes the Maple Leafs should consider moving on from Cowan:
''If I'm the Leafs Easton Cowan is no longer off the table ahead of this year's trade deadline.
Contrary to what a lot of folks are saying, he still has a lot of value. But Toronto might have to cash that chip sooner rather than later.''
However, many feel Cowan should be given some leniency regarding his World Juniors performance, as hockey is a team sport, and Team Canada left several talented players off of the roster.
Elliotte Friedman is one of those who believes Cowan deserves a pass, as per his recent commentary:
''I know Cowan really struggled the last couple of weeks, but I think you're insane if you're giving up on this kid based on two bad weeks. I see people saying, oh, they should trade him. Number one, his value will never be lower than it is now. And number two, I think it's bananas to give up on someone you really think highly of based on two bad weeks.''
Despite his struggles at the World Juniors, Cowan remains one of the Maple Leafs' top prospects. With a roster packed with talent, he faces a tough challenge to make the opening-night lineup next season.
Cowan clearly possesses the tools to succeed in the NHL, and his potential should not be overshadowed by this tournament performance. The Leafs should stay the course with this kid.
