Expectations haven't been met for several years. As such, the core of this team is under immense scrutiny and pressure and they don't seem to be able to handle it come playoff time.
Former Leafs assistant coach Dave Hakstol, however, disagrees. Hakstol was a guest on "Leafs Morning Take" this week, and really emphasized what an excellent job the Core 4 is doing, and appreciates how hard they work for a fanbase that doesn't always appreciate it.
And in that sense he's correct. Elite players are extremely hard to find. You never want to move one and if you do, what does the return look like? It's extremely risky. It is also very difficult to win a round, let alone four in the playoffs, especially in the Atlantic Division.
You can watch/listen to this segment of the interview here:
Elite players who are paid like elite players have to perform during the playoffs. It's about results and the sports business is like any other. Bad luck and injuries are things every team battles. The Core 4 have only won a single playoff round together. For many reasons, the results just aren't there. It's perfectly reasonable to consider a trade instead of spinning the wheel again if a good offer is out there.
Scrutiny can be tough, but it can also fair or warranted. These guys have all the talent in the world. All it takes is one playoff run and the Core 4 will have statues in Maple Leafs Square. Leafs Nation is quick to blame, but also quick to forgive, when presented with success. Go win.
