Leafs Captain Auston Matthews Silencing Critics with Torrid Scoring Pace Since Return
Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews appears to be back at his best, as evidenced by his impressive run of success following his return from injury.
The Toronto Maple Leafs secured an incredible come-from-behind victory over their longest running NHL rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, on Saturday night.
After trailing 3-0 in the first period, the Maple Leafs scored seven straight goals to dominate the Habs. Goaltender Joseph Woll was outstanding, making several incredible saves to propel the Leafs to victory.
Matthews, one of the goal scorers, netted a shorthanded goal in the game, marking the 386th goal of his NHL career.
As per NHL Insider Chris Johnston on X, this goal was one of significance for Matthews.
"The 386th goal of Auston Matthews' NHL career is the first he's ever scored short-handed."
Recently, Matthews spoke about how he was feeling much better, and he backed it up with yet another remarkable goal.
Since returning from injury, Matthews has quietly been exceptional, as pointed out by The Athletic's James Mirtle:
"Auston Matthews scoring at 73 goal pace since returning from injury."
So far this season, Matthews has posted 18 goals and 35 points in 32 games. His performance since coming back from injury has been even more impressive, with 7 goals in just 8 games, looking more like the player who scored 69 goals just one season ago.
Matthews and fellow superstar Mitch Marner have quickly rekindled their chemistry, making them the most dangerous duo on the ice whenever they are together.
The Maple Leafs will face another Atlantic Division rival, the Tampa Bay Lightning, on Monday, aiming to extend their win streak to three games. Matthews will look to continue his offensive success as the team looks to make it 3 straight wins.
