The Maple Leafs are currently $1.069M over the salary cap and have an abundance of forwards currently at training camp with the expectation that a contract is being worked on for Max Pacioretty and possibly one for Steven Lorentz.
Pacioretty's contract, and potentially Lorentz's, will put the Leafs significantly over the cap and while the Leafs are shopping and taking calls on Conor Timmins and his $1.1M salary, there hasn't been much to report in terms of any leading suitors.
In addition to shopping Timmins, the Leafs are also reportedly still shopping Nick Robertson, even though he has been signed through the 2024-25 season.
To clear even more cap and roster space, The Fourth Period's Dave Pagnotta has reported that the Leafs are now also shopping veteran forward Calle Jarnkrok and his $2.1M cap hit. Although Jarnkrok is dealing with a lower-body injury, Pagnotta reported that there are a handful of teams that could be in the market for a bottom-six forward that can play multiple positions such as Jarnkrok.
In an injury-riddled 52 games with the Maple Leafs last season, Jarnkrok registered 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points. The 33-year-old has another year remaining on his current deal and would provide the Leafs with some additional cap space next season as well. As we approach the end of training camp, we should get more clarity on the Leafs' roster and how they plan to manage the cap overages.
