Maple Leafs forward Calle Jarnkrok appears to be further away from returning to the lineup than initially anticipated.

The Maple Leafs have started the 2024-25 NHL season decently well, even though they currently sit with a 3-2-0 record before tonight's clash with division rival Tampa Bay Lightning. The record doesn't tell the whole story for a Leafs team who has quite arguably outplayed all 5 of their initial opponents. Unfortunately, instead of beginning the season 5-0-0, a couple of close losses to the Canadiens and Rangers have left them with a more modest record and some things to clean up.

The Leafs have dealt with some injury issues early in this season, as well as a flu bug that had whipped through the locker room, hitting John Tavares and William Nylander among several others. As far as the injuries are concerned, one player who has struggled with injuries throughout his time with the Maple Leafs is Swedish forward Calle Jarnkrok, and this season is no different. His latest ailment, a lower-body injury, has kept him out of the lineup since the pre-season.

Jonas Siegel of The Athletic provided an update on Jarnkrok's health in his recent Monday Morning Leafs Report article. In the article, he touched on the Leafs' winger depth and the early struggles of John Tavares, noting that Jarnkrok's absence isn't helping the Leafs in the offense department. He also revealed that Jarnkrok remains far away from a potential return.

''The eventual return of Calle Järnkrok should help, though he's not close to returning.''

While the Maple Leafs would gladly welcome Jarnkrok back to the lineup, given his ability to play up and down the roster, contribute to the penalty kill, and potentially score close to 20 goals, his health issues aren't doing the team any favours.

As far as where Jarnkrok may fit in when he returns, the Leafs are already juggling around several pieces to try to get guys involved in the action. Still, someone has to sit, and Max Pacioretty and Ryan Reaves have already been swapped in and out during the first five games, and Pacioretty has admitted it's challenging to adjust to such changes. This raises the question: where would Jarnkrok fit in the current lineup, and who would come out for him?

It's worth noting that the Maple Leafs haven't had to deal with surplus depth in quite some time, which can be seen as a positive. However, the reality is that the team will face tough decisions once Jarnkrok and other injured players fully recover.
