Former Maple Leafs winger Matt Martin reportedly an option for the team as they look to bolster the roster at the left wing position.

Over the weekend, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman piqued the interest of Leafs Nation when he reported that the Maple Leafs were currently weighing their options on how they might be able to address a roster need on the left wing.

Since that time, a number of names have been mentioned, including Nick Cousins, Max Pacioretty, and another former Maple Leaf, James van Riemsdyk. Now, we can add Matt Martin's name into the fray.

"Matt Martinis a somewhat sentimental option, what with the affable ex-Leaf sitting on the unemployment line just 45 games short of 1,000.

A solid teammate and leader who knows his role, Martin is tight with the likes of Mitch Marner and brings a brand of hockey befitting of Berube and Treliving. (The GM won't let a player's date of birth scare him away if he likes the asset.)"
-Luke Fox on Martin and the Leafs

The one question Fox had about the potential fit was whether or not the Leafs would even consider the move with Ryan Reaves already on the roster, since Martin would essentially play the same role.

Personally, I think the Leafs might be better off simply letting the kids play than bringing in another 35+ player, but maybe that's just me.

Martin suited up in 57 games for the New York Islanders in 2023-24, amassing 4 goals and 4 assists for a total of 8 points over that span. Let's face it, if the Leafs do sign him, they wouldn't be doing it for the point production.
