After a breakout season in the OHL with the London Knights in 2023-24, which saw him secure both the regular season and playoff MVP honours after a 96-point season and 34-point playoff performance, Easton Cowan is now officially off to the NHLPA's Rookie Showcase.
As reported by Devils beat reporter Amanda Stein, Cowan will join the likes of 2024 1st overall pick Macklin Celebrini, Red Wings 1st round pick Nate Danielson and Flyers top prospect Matvei Michkov, among others at the event. Cowan will be the only Leafs prospect present.
While originally viewed as a long shot to make the Maple Leafs this coming season, Cowan's outstanding 2023-24 campaign has really boosted his stock. Not only did the Mount Brydges, Ontario kid make the Canadian World Junior team last year, he appears to he a lock for the upcoming tournament at the end of December as well.
Now, with his addition to the NHLPA's Rookie Showcase, competing alongside other top NHL prospects, it's becoming very clear very quickly that Cowan is a special talent who is worthy of consideration to play in the NHL this season. He'll still have to show up to Maple Leafs training camp in excellent shape and put in the work, but we shouldn't be surprised if Cowan's name is on the opening night roster for the Maple Leafs in 2024-25.
