Campbell, during his first full season as backup netminder in Toronto, went 17-3-2 over 22 games, complimented nicely by a 2.15 GAA and .921 SV%. His following season, the first in his career as a 1A goalie, was a bit of a different story, as Campbell's numbers came back down to Earth to the tune of a 21-9-6 record, 2.64 GAA and .914 SV%.
These were still respectable numbers, but rather than continuing on in Toronto on a modest extension, Campbell chose, instead, to chase the bag and signed a 5-year, $25M contract with the Edmonton Oilers in hopes of becoming a full-time starter, rather than having to play in a tandem situation again in Toronto. What followed was a disastrous first season with the Oilers and an even worse start in his second season in Edmonton, which led to his demotion to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.
Campbell's first few games with Bakersfield were, let's just say less than ideal. However, in his 4th game with the Condors last night Campbell shut the door, making 29 saves to secure the shutout, bringing his record to 1-3-0, with a 3.26 GAA and a .873 SV%.
Will this win act as a bit of a catalyst for Campbell and allow him to get his game going? That's the hope. However, if Campbell wants to get out of the dog house in Edmonton, he'll have to string a few more quality starts together first.
