Insider confirms that the Leafs are a possibility for top remaining UFA
For the last couple of weeks, we've been hearing rumblings about Patrick Kane perhaps nearing the point of narrowing down the list of teams with which he'd be prepared to sign.
While we don't yet have a confirmed list of teams to report on, TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston revealed in an article on Wednesday that he has heard that the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres are all potentially in the running. He also suggested that the Leafs, while probably a long shot, are also a possibility.
What the Leafs don't have is cap space or a gaping need for what Kane does best since they're already rolling out Mitch Marner and William Nylander on right wing � who would come off the top power-play unit to make room for him? � but they do boast an appealing sell in the form of fellow American Auston Matthews. Matthews grew up idolizing Kane, so there could be some sentimental appeal for everyone involved with bringing that duo together.
It's also notable that Kane spent a considerable amount of time in the Greater Toronto Area while rehabbing and recovering from hip surgery in recent months. Kane is already rumoured to be at or near 100%, but according to Kane himself back in September, he and his representation were completely fine waiting until he was at 110% before he makes his return, just as a precaution. We're nearing the point where he'd approaching that mark and, as a result, I'm sure the rumours will continue to fly until Kane finally makes his decision - which will, hopefully, be soon.
