Unfortunately for Schenn, when McCabe was selecting his jersey number (since his regular #6 is retired by the Leafs), his back-up numbers were both already taken within the organization. He eventually settled on #2, which was revealed to Leafs Nation on Monday evening. When Schenn was picked up, McCabe had already selected his number, so Schenn decided to take #22 instead.
Schenn, a 33-year-old former top-5 draft pick by the Leafs with two Stanley Cups to his credit, is a respected veteran around the league. Even Ryan O'Reilly referred to him by his old nickname earlier today, calling him the "Human Eraser" and stating that the Leafs were thrilled to have him coming back to where it all started for him, in Toronto.
McCabe, who is 4 years Schenn's junior, has made the ultimate teammate gesture, offering up Schenn's former #2 back to him in exchange for his new #22 in a good ol' fashioned jersey number swap. Schenn obviously appreciated McCabe's sign of respect as he was quick to accept the offer.
There has been a lot of talk over the last few seasons about how tight-knit this Leafs team is. By the looks of things, these two guys are going to fit right in.
