After just 4 games last season, Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin missed the remainder of the regular season and playoffs due to a serious neck injury. The loss of Muzzin was a huge blow to the depth of the Leafs' blueline, not just because of his experience, but because of his play style. He was an anomaly on the Leafs' blueline because of his physicality and size, something the Leafs didn't address until the Luke Schenn trade just before the deadline.

Muzzin was still a presence in the Leafs dressing room and continues to be a large part of the leadership group, but has likely played his last game. Brad Treliving announced today that Muzzin will miss the entire season as he continues to deal with the injury he suffered last season. Muzzin is in the final year of a 4-year extension he signed in 2020 with the Leafs that pays him $5.625M per season. With Muzz being on LTIR the entire season, the Leafs will benefit from the cap space it will provide, but will still miss the presence of the former Stanley Cup champion.

It's unfortunate that Muzzin's career likely came to an end the way it did. After a fantastic playoff performance against Tampa, Muzzin looked refreshed and healthy entering last season until he suffered the injury. Muzzin has skated in 683 games with the Leafs and Kings, registering 294 points to go along with 2 Stanley Cups. https://x.com/mikeystephens81/status/1704503335254982776?s=20
