Matthew Knies taking an admirable approach to his first Leafs training camp
For Matthew Knies, coming into his first NHL training camp must be intimidating, even if it's also exciting. While it's likely that he's already penciled in somewhere in the top 6, perhaps even the top 9, I don't think anyone is too concerned with the idea that he might not make the team out of camp. Still, in his mind, he still has a lot to prove and wants to earn his spot.
Knies is currently living out of a hotel as he goes through training camp and the pre-season. He revealed on Friday that he's using living in a hotel as motivation to put his best foot forward at camp and keep himself focused on earning a roster spot with the Leafs.
This is such a great attitude for this young man to have. He wants to earn every inch and wants nothing given to him. Soon to be 22, Knies has just 3 games of regular season experience and 7 games of playoff experience. In his mind, he hasn't quite proven himself yet, even if it's obvious to the rest of us that he's already an NHL player. You have to admire his outlook and his commitment to having a strong camp above all else.
Knies also revealed that if he is successful in camp and if he does make the team, he may once again room with John Tavares while he searches for his own home in Toronto. For those who may recall, Tavares and his family opened up their home to Knies at the end of last season and have extended the same offer to start this season.
